Adamson, Allan. “Growing Number Of Cancer Cases Caused By Excess Weight.” Tech Times, 26 Mar. 2018, www.techtimes.com/articles/223715/20180326/growing-number-of-cancer-cases-caused-by-excess-weight.htm.

For Current Event 20, I chose to review an article from the Tech Times titled “Growing Number of Cancer Cases Caused By Excess Weight,” by Allan Adamson. Researchers have recently found that excess weight is now responsible for 6.3 percent of all cancer cases in the United Kingdom, a number that has risen 5.5 percent since 2011 (in only 7 years). While smoking remains a leading cause of cancer, the number of cases linked to tobacco use is falling, and the number caused by excess weight is growing. Weight problems are often preventable through a healthy diet and regular physical exercise, but many countries, including the United States, are currently facing an obesity epidemic. Those who are obese and have unhealthy eating and physical activity habits face a number of health issues, which include: an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, gallstones, high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, and sleep apnea. The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, provided evidence that excess weight is a growing risk factor for cancer, but this information is not new. Obesity has long been associated with higher odds for bowel cancer, breast cancer, and womb cancer. Obesity is not the only preventable risk factor for cancer, some of which include smoking, UV radiation, eating too little fiber, drinking alcohol, and outdoor air pollution. Katrina Brown, from Cancer Research UK, stated in the study: “Changing population-level exposure to modifiable risk factors is a key driver of changing cancer incidence.” The researchers found that over 135,000 cases could have been prevented through lifestyle changes.
Obesity is a growing issue in the United States- recent findings have stated that more and more American adults are getting fatter, and the obesity epidemic is growing worse. Knowing that obesity has such undesirable implications such as cancer. While the study mentioned in the article was based in the UK, a 2016 study summarizing worldwide estimates of the fractions of different cancers attributable to obesity reported that the US had the highest fractions attributable to obesity for colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and postmenopausal breast cancer. It is important to note that many studies have displayed consistent evidence that those adults with a lower weight gain have lower risks for many types of cancer. As our country continues to report a growing obesity rate, it is important to understand that obesity has many risks and dangers, which can lead to death. Maintaining a healthy diet and constantly exercising throughout your life is important so as not to fall overweight, because it is preventable (when not related to genetics).
The author, Adamson, did a great job with this article and topic. She cited sources, including the study itself and key contributors to the initial report. Grammatically and topically, the article was very well written, and it flowed nicely, making it an interesting read. There was no urgency to the article, no indication that the topic was important. In some cases, it is important to write articles solely based on facts, but in important topics such as this, it can be more beneficial if the author displays a passion for the topic, which would have added something to the article that seemed to be missing, and made the reader want to care about the topic as well. Overall, the article was well written, and very informative.

For current event 21, I reviewed Clio’s response to Allan Adamson’s article, “Growing Number of Cancer Cases Caused By Excess Weight” from Tech Times. The first thing that Clio did well was that she included statistics in her introduction paragraph, which included the number of cases of cancer due to excessive weight. Not only did was this information good for understanding the basics of the topic, it also showed how the number of cases is increasing. Along with the statistics, she includes background information on obesity, and other negative problems associated with it. Lastly, she included a quote from the Cancer Research Center of the UK, which is a credible source.
While many aspects of her response were very good, there are some sections that she could improve on. One piece of information that she could have included was if these cancer cases were seen outside of the United States and the United Kingdom, to show if this just a problem in these countries or a global problem. Another thing she could have included is critics on the article. Clio included many comments, but not critics.
Overall, Clio’s response to Allan Adamson’s article from the Tech Times was very informative. One thing that I learned was that obesity can increase the chance of developing certain cancers. I knew that obesity had many negative problems associated with it, but I did not know that cancer was one of them.

Clio wrote a great review of the Tech Times article, “Growing Number Of Cancer Cases Caused By Excess Weight.” She gave a wonderful summary of the article, setting up the background for the study. Her summary provided only the most important information allowing the reader to gain the best understanding possible. Another part of her review that was done well was her paragraph critiquing the article. It was important that she was able to see how the article was writing based solely on facts and that it may have been more impactful if the author displayed more passion. Her ability to recognize this proved to the reader that she read the article adding credibility and helped the reader judge how credible the article itself is. Finally, Clio was able to connect her article to everyone. She stated, “The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, provided evidence that excess weight is a growing risk factor for cancer. She was able to see how this study can help many people prevent cancer later in their lives. Overall, Clio wrote a great review that was both interesting and informative.

Despite writing an overall great article, there were two areas that Clio could improve. Firstly, Clio’s review was lacking data from the studies. She mentions, “The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, provided evidence that excess weight is a growing risk factor for cancer.” However, she does not include any of data they collected in the study. If she was to add this information, it would allow the reader to better understand what was done in the study and to better judge how excess weight is a factor for cancer. Secondly, she never mentioned if there were plans for further research. Without this, the reader is left wondering what else is being done to study how weight affects one’s chance of getting certain cancers. This information would not only help the reader gain a better understanding of the topic, it would allow the reader to judge how important this topic is in the eyes of researchers. If many more studies are being planned, one can imagine this topic is very important. These two additions would both add important information to Clio’s article helping the reader gain a fuller understanding of the topic.

I chose to read Clio’s article because of the title. I was interested in how weight gain had a role in cancer and chose to read more. From reading her review, I was better able to realize how many factors go into one’s health. I no realize how diet, exercise, and much more can have a large impact on one’s likelihood of getting certain diseases.

I chose to read Clio’s review on the article, "Report: Earth Is Losing Plants And Animals At A Dangerous Rate.” She gave a great background of the article. Susie did well explaining the number of cases of cancer due to excessive weight. She picked great quotes which helped move along the review and gave credibility. Susie then went on to explain the experiment in a detailed manner about obesity cases correlated to cancer.

There were two areas in which Susie could have improved. Susie could have cited more scientists in this experiment so that there would have been more credibility to the review. In addition, she could have proof read her work before turning it in because as of now, the work has mechanical errors.

In conclusion, Clio’s response to Allan Adamson’s article from the Tech Times was impressive. I learned many things such that obesity can increase the chance of developing certain cancers. I had known that obesity affected people negatively, but I just now found out that this can lead to cancer
