Current Event 17
For this current event, I read the article “1.5M ‘Rare Penguins’ Discovered in Antarctica” from Fox News. This article describes the recent discovery of remote islands islands near the Antarctic Peninsula on which 1.5 million Adelie penguins live. These penguins are one of five species of penguins that live on and around Antarctica and are identified by a white ring that surrounds their eye. Their average height is 70 centimeters and weight is about three to six kilogrammes. The population of this species has been decreasing very quickly, so scientists were very surprised to discover such a large group of them on these remote islands. This was the first bird census of the Danger Islands, which is a group of nine rocky islands off the northern tip of South America in the northwest Weddell Sea. The census found 750,000 breeding pairs of Adelie penguins on these islands as well as 100 nests of gentoo penguins and 27 nests of chinstrap penguins. Scientists were so shocked by the images of hundreds of penguins on the islands that they ordered a field expedition and drone footage.
However, the discovery of these penguins is not all good. The Danger Islands have not been affected as much by climate change and have faced little human impact. Although, now that scientists are aware of the animals inhabiting these islands, they are worried about the design of the Marine Protected Areas of the area, especially concerning overfishing. Adelie penguins are carnivores that feed primarily on krill, which are commercially fished in the region. As the authors wrote, “It is not known how long this tiny island group will remain protected, especially from fishing, as the polar regions are warming more rapidly than the rest of Earth as heat-trapping greenhouse gasses from fossil fuel-burning build up in the atmosphere.” Scientists will have to watch the islands and the penguin populations inhabiting them to track the effects of climate change on and fishing in the area.

This article was very well-written and informational. The authors did not use words and phrases that would be confusing for readers. It was not too long or too short. However, there are some aspects that could be improved. The authors could organize the article better; it skips around a lot and does not flow well. The authors also did not develop their ideas enough. For example, they stated that the discovery of the breeding pairs would have consequences for how scientists manage the region, but then began talking about Adelie penguins in another region. Overall, though, the article was very factual and enjoyable to read.

This week I read Susie’s review on an article about Adelie penguins discovered in Antarctica. Susie does a good job of summarizing the article. Susie also does a good job of including quantitative data into her report, "750,000 breeding pairs of Adelie penguins on these islands as well as 100 nests of gentoo penguins and 27 nests of chinstrap penguins.”. Lastly, Susie emphasized the importance of this discovery well by explaining how rare these penguins are and their high risk for extinction.
There were two areas which Susie could improve. I wish she had added more quotes from the article. I also believe that she should have included a more compelling reason as to why this article is relevant to readers. I thought her report was very interesting and I learned about a new endangered species of animal that exists on our planet.

Susie did a very nice job with her current event review on the article “1.5M 'Rare Penguins' Discovered in Antarctica,” from Fox News. I decided to review her report as the discovery of a rare breed of penguin was rather intriguing. There are many good techniques she uses throughout her report. One example is when she explains the specific and differential characteristics of the Adelie penguins. Susie goes into great detail about the Adelie penguin’s specific appearance and list of physical characteristics. Her focus on this factor of the original report is important as it provides background information to help the reader understand the topic at hand. Another aspect of Susie’s writing that was done rather well was when she included statistical information detailing the amount of individual penguins and their nests. This input of information further aids the reader in understanding just how many of the Adelie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins there are. Lastly, I appreciated how Susie included quotes from the original reports in her own current event. These quotes aided readers in understanding the negative aspect of scientists discovering the mass amount of penguins.

Overall, Susie’s report was extremely interesting and informative, however there are some details that she could tweak and add to make the current event report even that much better. I recommend that she explains how this discovery affects the world of science. Such a discovery is immense and it would have been interesting if Susie had gone into some detail concerning her own opinions and beliefs on the subject matter. This would have engaged readers even more than what was already done. Also, she could have given her thoughts about the scientists plan to keep an eye on the penguin habitat. While it is important that the scientists prevent individuals from interfering in the lifestyles of these animals, it is also necessary to make sure that their habitat is not be threatened by the rapid heating of the earth’s atmosphere.

Susie’s report was very informative and I learned extensively about a group of rare penguins discovered near the Antarctic Peninsula. Before reading the report, I had a weak understanding about the massive discovery of more of a dwindling penguin species. The important yet somewhat bizarre existence of this island of penguins should be acknowledged in the scientific community and actions towards preserving the islands should be put into effect immediately.

My fellow colleague Suzie Goodell wrote an insightful review on the article, “1.5M 'rare penguins' discovered in Antarctica” by AFP and staff writers. Suzie has many great aspects in her piece. For example, she writes a very brief yet informative summary of the article stating, “This article describes the recent discovery of remote islands islands near the Antarctic Peninsula on which 1.5 million Adelie penguins live. These penguins are one of five species of penguins that live on and around Antarctica and are identified by a white ring that surrounds their eye. Their average height is 70 centimeters and weight is about three to six kilogrammes. The population of this species has been decreasing very quickly, so scientists were very surprised to discover such a large group of them on these remote islands.” This background information is very helpful as it allows students to understand the remainder of the piece. Also, I feel that Susie did an amazing job of using simple vocabulary and word choice. This allows a large range of audiences to be able to comprehend the review. Furthermore, Susie uses quotes directly from the article stating, “It is not known how long this tiny island group will remain protected, especially from fishing, as the polar regions are warming more rapidly than the rest of Earth as heat-trapping greenhouse gases from fossil fuel-burning build up in the atmosphere.” The use of such sources allows the piece to be considered far more supported by fact and research.
Although I deeply enjoy the peace, I feel that a few areas could be improved simply. To begin, Susie occasionally uses the word “I” or a very informal tone throughout the piece. As this pieces for more academic, I would have liked to see few are personal pronouns in the review. Also, when Susie speaks of the work from the scientists, she does not use specific names when referring to these people. Without such names, the review was seen as less reliable and less researched. These issues can be easily improved through making sure to use a constant academic tone, and also finding specific researchers that have made discoveries.
What shocked me most is when Susie States, “Although, now that scientists are aware of the animals inhabiting these islands, they are worried about the design of the Marine Protected Areas of the area, especially concerning overfishing. Adelie penguins are carnivores that feed primarily on krill, which are commercially fished in the region.” This is so surprising as the fact that these penguins exist is a miracle;however, human impact could lead to their extinction. This makes me extremely upset as I can see how humans are the greatest threat to many species. This review will change my life as I am deeply interested in the topic and will continue to follow this issue in the future.

Susie wrote a great review based off the article “1.5M 'Rare Penguins' Discovered in Antarctica” from Fox News. The article discusses Adelie penguins that were discovered in Antarctica. Throughout the review of the article, there were many aspects that Susie did well in order to write a great review. Firstly, Susie did a great job of providing the audience with a concise summary of the article that she read. This detailed summary allows the reader to understand the main point of the article without any confusion. Susie also did a excellent job of weaving in quotes from the article to use to further ground her information. For example, she includes “It is not known how long this tiny island group will remain protected, especially from fishing, as the polar regions are warming more rapidly than the rest of Earth as heat-trapping greenhouse gases from fossil fuel-burning build up in the atmosphere.” The use of quotes backed up her claims and explained concepts that she introduced in her summary. Lastly, Susie also does a good job of including quantitative data into her report, "750,000 breeding pairs of Adelie penguins on these islands as well as 100 nests of gentoo penguins and 27 nests of chinstrap penguins.” Susie successfully wrote a clear and interesting review of the article she read.
Although Susie presented a great review of the article, there were some aspects where she could have improved. Firstly, Susie did a great job of incorporating other works from scientists but it would have been beneficial if she included the specific names of the scientists. Doing so would have made the review more reliable. Also, Susie should have explained how this discovery affects the world of science. This discovery is huge and it would have been interesting if Susie had gone into some detail about her own opinions and beliefs. These issues are both easy to fix in order to make Susie’s review even better. Even though there were some parts of the review that Susie could have improved, I think she wrote a great review of the article.
I thought Susie did a great job in writing her review and I really enjoyed reading it. I learned an extensive amount of information about a rare group of penguins discovered near the Antarctic Peninsula. The existence of this island of penguins should be acknowledged and actions towards preserving the islands should be put into effect immediately. I chose to read this review because prior to reading this I had a weak understanding about this massive discovery. After reading Susie’s review, I want to learn more about this topic. Overall, I think Susie successfully wrote a clear and detailed review of her article.

I read Susie Goodell’s review of the article “1.5M 'Rare Penguins' Discovered in Antarctica” by Fox News. One area that was well done was her summary of the situation and description of the penguins. Her use of imagery helps readers to understand the way those rare penguins looked and was helpful in articles such as these which are more about a thing/animal rather than an experiment. Another area that was well done was her relation to humanity section. In this part, she addressed many dangers and problems of finding out abuot these penguins such as the depletion of fish / food sources now that humans know about the penguins. There is also the problem of poaching and hunting the animals. Lastly, she did a good job on her actual review where she listed many good points about both the pros and cons of the article. She had a nice description and even gave examples as to why the flow could be better (giving a more constructive critique).
One part that could be better is adding in a quote from maybe someone on the expedition or one of the scientists who were involved in finding out about these penguins. The inclusion of some expert quote would have helped enhance her article and perhaps give more insight into her discussion about the dangers of this discovery. Another area that could have been improved was with her summary. I’m not sure if it was because the article itself didn't have much more information, but I felt she could have included more on how the scientists discovered about the penguins (like why they were at the island in the first place) and could have talked more about what the scientists and ecologists are thinking about doing in order preserve this environment.
Overall, I enjoyed the review especially because of her interesting points about how sometimes, scientific studies are not always good. I feel more should be put into helping the penguins and keeping their environment and home away from other humans who may use the penguins as a source of money, or those who might ruin the habitat.

There were many aspects of Susie’s review written well. One part of her review that I felt she did particularly well was her description of the news species of penguin discovered. For instance she states how “These penguins are one of five species of penguins that live on and around Antarctica and are identified by a white ring that surrounds their eye. Their average height is 70 centimeters and weight is about three to six kilogrammes.” Through this summary the reader is able to understand the main point of the article that is being reviewed. Another part of the review which was done well was the addition of quotes from research on this topic. For example, “Scientists were so shocked by the images of hundreds of penguins on the islands that they ordered a field expedition and drone footage.” Through this the reader understands what research was conducted. This is also allows the reader to understand the tone of the article through direct quotes from the passage. Another part of the review that was done well was her ability to describe how this discovery is beneficial to the rest of the world. For instance she states, “ However, the discovery of these penguins is not all good. The Danger Islands have not been affected as much by climate change and have faced little human impact.” This strengthened her review because the reader was able to see how research is useful for a lot of the population.
Although there were many parts of Susie’s review written well there were areas for improvement. One part of her review which could have been improved was her critique paragraph. Although she did mention the negatives and positives of the article I wish she had been less general when stating her positives and gone into more detail. Through adding more specific details about the positives of the article the reader would have had a better understanding of the article. Another part of the article that could have been improved was if she added more details about the new discoveries that could occur from this study. Also this would help strengthen her description of the research as a whole.
Overall, I felt Susie wrote a strong review of this article which the reader could easily understand. Her review was written clearly and smoothly which allowed the reader to learn about the topic more easily and understand the research conducted. I enjoyed reading this review because I learned more about a new species of penguin. Overall, I liked how she described the research that was done and the effects on the present world. Through her discussion of this article the reader got a better grasp on the topic and the importance of this new discovery.

This week I read Susie’s review on the Fox News article titled “1.5M 'Rare Penguins' Discovered in Antarctica.” In particular, Susie did three things very well in her reflection. Firstly, Susie did a great job providing her audience with a thoughtful, detailed summary. By doing this, she set-up the rest of her review and made sure that her readers were well informed about the topic at hand. Secondly, Susie included quotes from the original article. In doing so, Susie established her credibility as an author and as a critic. Finally, Susie included statistics to further her review and to back her claims made in her summary paragraph. For example, she writes, “Their average height is 70 centimeters and weight is about three to six kilogrammes” and “The census found 750,000 breeding pairs of Adelie penguins on these islands as well as 100 nests of gentoo penguins and 27 nests of chinstrap penguins.” This allowed Susie to provide her audience with evidence to support her claims and to incorporate statements made in the original article from Fox News.
Although her article was well-written and thorough, Susie could improve upon two aspects of her review for next time. Firstly, she could have provided her audience with a more in-depth explanation about the importance of this topic. If Susie had done this, she would have allowed her readers to fully understand the subject and why it is being discussed. Secondly, Susie could have expanded on the expedition aspect and could have discussed the details of that trip. For example, if she had specified who went to Antarctica, when they went there, and how they collected all of their footage, she could have provided her readers with more information on the study. She also could have researched about who originally found the rare penguins.
I read Susie’s article because I love the topic she chose and I believe that it is important for everyone to know about our planet and what is being discovered on a daily basis. As long as we stay informed about new discoveries, we will remain in touch with our planet and will be able to better understand how we can help save it. Since new things are discovered daily, there is still more to explore and to be analyzed. Susie’s review helps emphasize the need to protect these new species and their habitats, most of which are fading rapidly.
