Borenstein, Seth. “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters.” U.S. News & World Report, The Associated Press, 24 Nov. 2018, www.usnews.com/news/news/articles/2018-11-23/government-climate-report-warns-of-worsening-us-disasters.

In his U.S. News & World Report, “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters,” Seth Borenstein analyzes the National Climate Assessment, a report released by the White House on Black Friday. The annual report combines over 1,000 research studies to construct a comprehensive review of climate change and its effects in the United States. The assessment contains many alarming statistics about the repercussions of climate change, claiming that “the last few years have smashed U.S. records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015” and “in some areas, such as parts of Alaska and Louisiana, coastal flooding will likely force people to relocate.” Borenstein points out that the report contradicts many of Trump’s tweets and press statements that denounce and reject climate change. He also points out the peculiar timing of the publication. Why did the White House publish such a significant report assessing the severity of climate change on Black Friday? Many speculate that it hoped to draw little attention to the report through its publication date as most Americans would be focused on shopping.

The subject of Borenstein’s article, climate change, is extremely important as it plays a crucial role in the future of our planet. As mentioned in his article, in just a few decades, parts of the country will be submerged in water, forcing millions to move inland, and environmental disasters like wildfires and hurricanes will become more frequent and severe. It is clear the climate change, especially under the current Administration, will continue to harm states across the U.S. and even the globe. Additionally, Borenstein’s article is significant since many Americans are not aware of the White House’s assessment; citizens need to become aware of the threats that jeopardize their way of life and the survival of future generations in order to make more informed, eco-friendly decisions.

Borenstein wrote a fantastic article that was able to explain a very complex, controversial topic in a straightforward manner. He summarized the long, detailed National Climate Assessment in a few sentences, allowing him to maintain the reader’s attention. Additionally, Borenstein cited both relevant and frightening statistics from the assessment that serve to emotionally connect with the reader. On the negative side, Borenstein could have further investigated Trump’s impact on climate change in future years as his discussion on that matter seemed rather light. Through his article, Borenstein will no doubt raise awareness for climate change and the Administration’s effects on it.

Charlotte’s summary and review of Borenstein’s report on climate change was both interesting and informative. Her article was engaging and was able to discuss many aspects of a very complex issue while focusing on Borenstein’s article. One thing I enjoyed about Charlotte’s writing was the inclusion of other issues surrounding climate change, such as the Trump Administration’s lack of proper response to what should be considered an environmental disaster. By drawing attention to the political side of a scientific issue, she was able to make connections for her reader and introduce a new topic. I also liked that Charlotte provided her own analysis of what this report and its implications could mean for our country. Finally, I liked her criticism of the author, when she said that he should have discussed Trump more; I agree that this issue is also a political one and should be discussed more in that light.
One thing I thought Charlotte could improve upon was her claim that climate change would be exacerbated under the current administration. I think that in order to strengthen her argument, she could provide some examples or talk more about the current administration’s policies regarding this issue. Another thing I thought she could improve on was her discussion of the study itself: I think that she should have talked more about the details of the report and how it was conducted in order to make more sense of its implications and to give validity to its findings.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this article and Charlotte’s review. I did not know that the report had been released, and I was further shocked to learn that its release date may have been scheduled to decrease awareness. The administration should not be hiding this important information from the public, especially when its implications could affect everyone in this country. This article made me realize the truly dire consequences of climate change and its possible effect on our planet.

In his U.S. News & World Report, “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters,” Seth

Charlotte Cagliostro’s review of Seth Bornstein’s article more than adequately provides a detailed summary of the article and its main points, and is extremely articulate and comprehensible. The summary is easy to follow and is extremely specific on the article’s main points. The strong summary is crucial to the review, as it allows the reader to have a strong knowledge base of the covered topics. The review’s prose quality is also of high quality, using advanced strategies like a rhetorical question in “Why did the White House publish such a significant report assessing the severity of climate change on Black Friday?”. The strong writing quality demonstrates mastery of the material reviewed and creates not only an informative but creative and entertaining review to read. Cagliostro also provides strong quote integration in ‘ “claiming that “the last few years have smashed U.S. records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015” ’, which allows the reader to see particular parts of the review which stood out, and brings credibility to review, as it extracts directly from the article.
However, the review does have some weaknesses. Firstly, although providing opinion can strengthen a review, it is used to excess in the review and undermines the objective and academic point of view of the article. This is easily improved on, as some adjectives like “fantastic” can be changed for less subjective words, and will make a significant overall improvement on the review. Furthermore, the review does not go into very much detail when summarizing the article’s conclusion: the central theme and position of the article. Although it goes into great detail when summarizing all other parts, the reader may be left unsure of the article author’s position. This can be fixed by paying more attention to the thesis of the article and incorporating it in great detail into the review.
Climate change is a pressing issue on nearly all aspects of human life. Despite its previously noticed consequences on various fronts, most notably natural disasters, and the climate. Although I am fairly well versed and knowledgeable about this issue, it is always enriching to see more perspectives and positions on climate change, as it is the world’s most pressing issue. The review allowed me to digest an additional source of knowledge beyond an article, giving me the insight of a reviewer, which fortifies my overall knowledge of climate change.

I enjoyed reading Charlotte’s review of “Government Climate Report Warns of
Worsening US Disasters” by Seth Borenstein. Her review is concise but very powerful. She included an abundance of controversial information that really impacted my view on climate change. Furthermore, her use of statistics put great emphasis on the main argument in this article. Regarding climate change, she stated that “the last few years have smashed U.S. records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015 and in some areas, such as parts of Alaska and Louisiana, coastal flooding will likely force people to relocate”. These facts are very alarming, and caught my attention quickly in the beginning of her review. I was also very surprised to read this part, “Borenstein points out the peculiar timing of the publication. Why did the White House publish such a significant report assessing the severity of climate change on Black Friday? Many speculate that it hoped to draw little attention to the report through its publication date as most Americans would be focused on shopping”. Charlotte brings up a very interesting point in her review, and it has me thinking that the claim may be true.
While Charlotte’s review was very good, I think there are two areas that she could improve on. First, I wish she included some information on why she chose this topic and why it is important to her. I also think it would have been interesting if she had elaborated on how the statistics she used in her review were obtained.
I found this review very interesting, especially the part about the government posting the review on black friday to possible draw attention away from the findings. I am surprised that I have not seen any news on it, and think it is extremely wrong if the administrations intentions were to hide the report. People have the right to know about the impact of climate change, especially when they are the ones being most affected.

Borenstein, Seth. “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters.” U.S. News & World Report, The Associated Press, 24 Nov. 2018, www.usnews.com/news/news/articles/2018-11-23/government-climate-report-warns-of-worsening-us-disasters.

After reading Charlotte’s review on Seth Borenstein’s “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters.” I thought that she summarized the information in a concise fashion, highlighted the severity of climate change, and incorporated quotes nicely. Charlotte’s review of the article was straight to the point and explained all the key information presented in the article. She also included useful quotes to add to her review. She inserted the quotes smoothly and they further established the point of the article. I particularly enjoyed the quote about how ‘the last few years have smashed U.S. records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015.” Lastly, Charlotte was able to emphasize the importance of preventing climate change and disasters. She explained the impact climate change has on natural disasters and made the reader aware of said disasters. Also, she wrote that many people were unaware of the presented challenge, therefore Borenstein's article was very educational and important.
Although Charlotte’s review was well crafted, I believe she could add more on areas of improvement for Borenstein. She did say that Borenstein could have further investigated the Administration and Trump’s impact on climate change, which was useful. However, it would have been more interesting to include another aspect/ drawback of his article. Additionally, Charlotte could have put in her opinion a little more. She did explain the side effects of climate change and how necessary it is for people to become informed but did not state her personal views. I think that adding her viewpoint and opinions would have made her review more engaging. It also would have connected to her audience/readers more.
I enjoyed reading this article and review because I knew a lot about climate change and its impact on the Earth and other factors from previous current events, but I did not know about natural disasters. It is interesting to see and read articles that connect climate change to everything around us and our environment. It opened my eyes to the relationships and correlations between multiple factors and the environment, everything is affected. Also, it is concerning to me that we are not doing more to stop climate change, especially top government organizations who have the power to do so.

Borenstein, Seth. “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters.” U.S. News & World Report, The Associated Press, 24 Nov. 2018, www.usnews.com/news/news/articles/2018-11-23/government-climate-report-warns-of-worsening-us-disasters.

I read my classmate, Charlotte’s review of the article “Government Climate Report Warns of Worsening US Disasters” by Seth Borenstein. This article describes a recent study done by the US that detailed the extent of climate change. One thing I think Charlotte did a good job with is that she was able to incorporate quotes into her review. Not only did this enhance the credibility of her review but it added more scientific evidence to her review. An example of this is when she quoted, "the last few years have smashed U.S. records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015", this helped the reader understand the severity of the problem. Another positive aspect of this review was how she was able to summarize the article in a way that allowed the reader to understand such a complex topic. Charlotte was able to do this by describing how the changing climate would correlate to specific natural disasters. Finally, I liked how Charlotte was able to compliment the author by saying that their article worked as a good summary for the National climate assessment.
Although Charlotte did a great job on this review, she still has some room for improvement. One example of how Charlotte could have improved her review would have been to include a third paragraph about her thoughts on climate change and what she thought was the worst natural disaster that could be caused by climate change. Additionally, as a reader, I think that Charlotte should have included more quotes from the article, if she had done this it would have helped the reader understand the point of view of the author better.
When I first saw this review I was surprised to hear about how many disasters were upcoming a result of climate change. This review was able to open my eyes to aspects of global warming I had not considered before, and it has helped me understand how much global warming is affecting earth. After reading this review I was also shocked that I had not heard of this review outside of these blog posts, I find it interesting how these issues are often under-reported, and I feel that more articles like these should be published so we can raise awareness for this topic.
