Year in Review: 'Three-parent Baby' Technique Raises Hope and Concern

Saey, Tina Hesman. "Year in Review: 'Three-parent Baby' Technique Raises Hope and Concern." Science News. N.p., 14 Dec. 2016. Web. 03 Jan. 2017.

For this week’s current event I read an article by Tina Hesman Saey about the “three-parent baby” born this past April. This was the first birth to be recorded and was the result of a highly controversial and complex matter. The mother of this baby had a mitochondrial disease that would have been passed on to her child, as had happened with her previous two babies who passed away due to inherited mutations. In order to prevent this the article explains,“Fertility doctor John Zhang of the New Hope Fertility Center in New York City and colleagues performed what’s called a spindle transfer to put all the chromosomes from the mother’s egg into a donor egg that contained healthy mitochondria but had been emptied of its chromosomes. The egg was then fertilized with sperm and implanted in the mother.” The author then goes on to explain the controversy of this matter and how some view it as unethical and potentially dangerous as there is no way to predict the long term effects that may come as a result.
This issue is very relevant to society as it opens up discussion about the ethics of modifying human zygotes and the potential for genetic modification and further disease prevention. This area of science is expanding and with this trial shows either potential to continue with this sort of procedure or put an end to it all together. Genetics are an up and coming area of discovery and have unlocked endless potentials.

I thought the other of this article did an exceptional job. They clearly explained the matter in terms and language easily interpreted by their readers, and even more impressive, providing a diagram of the process the describe. It was very intriguing to see it laid out and be able to understand more deeply how the transfer of the mitochondria occurs. The author also cited numerous experts and professionals with a wide variety of perspectives. They addressed the controversy which surrounds these procedures and  got information for both sides of the argument. They als went into further depth regarding possible risks and how we have reached the ability to perform this. She gave history on these sorts of procedures, explained the trials on animals, acknowledged the failure of similar attempts, and even recognized the possible future in the UK of this subject. I thought this was a great article and was extremely successful in addressing all points of discussion alongside clear, thorough explanation.

Grace’s review of Three-parent Baby' Technique Raises Hope and Concern was a very interesting review. First of all, since this topic was completely foreign to me, I liked that Grace gave a thorough explanation of how the procedure was done, giving us the steps that were done to achieve this procedure. This helped me understand what exactly was happening and why this procedure could be considered controversial. Furthermore, Grace did a really good job explaining why this technique is controversial and could possibly be banned in her second paragraph, relating it to the topics of ethics and disease prevention. Finally, the fact that Grace brought in a direct quote from the article about scientist John Zhang helped make her article concrete and understandable.
Although this review was well written, one way it could have been made better is that Grace could have elaborated a bit more in her first paragraph as it felt a bit short and left some of my questions about the topic unanswered. So, by just writing a few more sentences about possible risks of this technique would have made her review more thorough. In addition, she stated that the article had cited numerous experts and professionals with a wide variety of perspectives, thus I would have liked to know some of these perspectives. By putting in a sentence or two about this, Grace could have made her review even more detailed.
Overall, this review was very thought out and captivating. I had never heard about this technique and so I was very surprised when I read Grace’s review. Thus, learning about this was very enlightening and taught me many new things. Reading this review made me want to research more about other techniques that are considered controversial and unethical as I find it very interesting. This review really got me to think more about the subject of ethics and the potential of new technologies.

I read the review of and the article “Three-parent Baby” and I learned many new interesting things. I liked how the author of the article explained the controversial process as to how this “three-parent baby” was created. The author explained that the doctor performed what is called a spindle transfer to put all the chromosomes from the mother’s egg into a donor egg that contained healthy mitochondria but had been emptied of its chromosomes. The egg was then fertilized with sperm and implanted in the mother. I also liked how the author of the review explained how controversial this experiment truly was, saying that it brought up much conversation and issues. Lastly, I liked how the author talked about how important this experiment is to society, saying that it opens up the discussion about the ethics of modifying human zygotes and the potential for genetic modification and further disease prevention. I really enjoyed reading this article and it had many positives.
Even though this article has many good aspects, it also had some negative. I did not like how the authors of both the article and its review did not talk about the issues this experiment brought up among scientists and the government because that would have shown the importance of this investigation even more. Also, I did not like how the authors did not talk about what is going to happen to this experiment and if any other experiments will branch from this one. What are some specific examples of how this will impact society? Although there were some negative aspects, I really enjoyed reading this article.
I learned a lot from reading this article. First, I learned about a new technique that could change so much in science! I learned how the process works and how this can lead to bigger and more significant experiments. Also, I learned about the history of these sort of procedures and how important this successful procedure was. This article can impact society because it can completely change the history of science and experiments through this one successful procedure. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this article and I look forward to learning more about this topic in the future.

I read Grace’s review of “Three parent baby” I thought that this article was very interesting and Grace did a good job reviewing it. I liked how she included the controversy of this topic. Grace did a very good job including all of the definitions and explaining the process of the spindle transfer to put all of mothers chromosomes into a donor egg, this really helped me to understand each step. I also like how she included some direct quotes from the article.
Although Grace did a good job I think that she could have improved a few things. I think she could have talked about the future more and what other experiments will be done from this one. I also think that she should have gone into more detail about the other scientists and professionals opinions, so we could get a better understanding of what they think about it.
Overall, I learned a lot from this article and thought it was very interesting. I did not know that this technique was possible, and had never heard about it. Grace’s review was very helpful in helping me understand this process and the issues around it. It makes me think about the future and the technologies that will be available.

I read Grace Randall’s review of the Science News article, “Year in Review: ‘Three-parent Baby’ Technique Raises Hope and Concern” and thought that she did a very good job. I particularly liked her summary of the article and its main points. She kept her summary short and concise, which summaries are supposed to be, yet still included enough information for the reader to understand what happened in the article. In addition, I enjoyed her use of quotes in her review. She includes this quote “Fertility doctor John Zhang of the New Hope Fertility Center in New York City and colleagues performed what’s called a spindle transfer to put all the chromosomes from the mother’s egg into a donor egg that contained healthy mitochondria but had been emptied of its chromosomes. The egg was then fertilized with sperm and implanted in the mother.” I thought that this quote was a very good way of explaining what the doctor is doing exactly, refraining from over simplifying the procedure in her own words. Lastly, I think that Grace’s second paragraph was very well written and she was able to thoroughly explain the prevalence in the readers lives when describing the controversy regarding ethics.

Although Grace did a very good job in her review, she could use some improvement. For example, Grace did not include any statistics or specific numbers which would have provided the reader with solid facts, emphasizing the validity in everything she was saying. Lastly, Grace never wrote about the future of this phenomenon and would other experiments may be performed. I think that this is a key aspect of the review that many are interested in learning more about.

I thought that the review was written very well and Grace chose a great article to talk about. I think that the topic is very interesting and different and Grace has further educated me on the topic. I never knew about this topic before reading Grace’s review and now feel knowledgeable on this topic. Overall, I really enjoyed Grace’s review and learned a lot from it.

Grace’s review of “Year in Review: ‘Three-parent Baby’ Technique Raises Hope and Concern” by Tina Hesman Saey was interesting to read. She explained how the process involved the reproductive material of three people. I did not know that it involved the chromosomes of the mother, a donor egg of another female, and the sperm of the father. Grace integrated a relevant quote that enhanced the review. It described the study and how the process is performed. Grace’s connection to society was intriguing, mentioning how some find the scientific breakthrough immoral.
Although Grace mentions how some find the science behind the three-parent baby unethical, she never elaborates the argument of these people. Also, she did not discuss what can be done in the future with this new breakthrough.
The review was well-written and Grace chose an interesting article. The three-parent baby technique makes me optimistic towards future scientific discoveries. These techniques will reduce genetic diseases and disorders.
