In the article, “Ebola vaccine proves effective, final trial results show”, the recetn triumph of a recent Ebola vaccine is discussed. Researchers found “Of 5,837 people in Guinea who received a single shot of the vaccine, rVSV-ZEBOV, in the shoulder, none became infected with the virus 10 to 84 days after vaccination. ” They discuss how the World Health Organization used a “ring vaccination” approach, in which they vaccinate people in close proximity to those already infected. This is an effort to prevent the virus from spreading any further. Supposedly, these results resemble those of similar studies in 2015. The article also discusses the history of the outbreaks.
This study is greatly applicable to society, as the creation of this vaccine could save thousands of lives. Considering the number of deaths that came as a result of the outbreak in 2013, a vaccine that could put a stop to this horrible virus would be incredible. The next step is to ensure all people have access to this vaccine, as to ensure it is really effective.
I thought the author of this article did a pretty decent job, but there were still some areas she could have improved upon. For the most part, I felt her writing was very clear and concise. I was able to really understand this material and get a good overview of the newest advancements with the Ebola virus. Still, I felt the author could have gone into some more depth. It was a much shorter article, and I felt as though he just skimmed the surface. I am still really curious about how researchers discovered this vaccine and what the future of it may look like.
In Grace’s review of the article "Ebola Vaccine Proves Effective, Final Trial Results Show," she discussed to research and success of an Ebola vaccine. She explained that the study found that out of 5,837 people who were injected with the vaccine none became infected in next 10 to 84 days. She then explained how a study was done where they injected the vaccine into people who lived in close proximity to people already infected, in order to prevent the further spread of the disease.
ReplyDeleteI think that Grace could have improved her review by stating the history of the outbreaks, since she says the article explains it. This would give the reader more insight into the topic. She also could have explained how successful this vaccine was when it was used on people in close proximity to infected people.
I chose to read Grace’s review because the topic is interesting and the title grabbed my attention. From reading her review I learned about a new vaccine that could hopefully stop the spread of Ebola and eventually cause it to die out. After reading this I feel like the future is brighter and this could hopefully lead to completely wiping out Ebola in the future.

Grace does a good job reviewing the article that she chose. She correctly summarizes the important aspects that the author touches on. She also included an important quote to give a better overview of the article and its argument. Grace also did a good job explaining her own point of view on the subject.
If I were to make suggestions to Grace I would tell her to elaborate more all throughout her review. I would also tell her to analyze the quotes that she found more, instead of just including them.
Overall Grace’s review was well written. I read hers because the article title caught my eye. While the information I learned will not impact me directly it is still interesting to hear about progress in virus vaccines.
Grace’s review of Ebola Vaccine Proves Effective, Final Trial Results Show was a very interesting review. First of all, it really helped that she used statistics regarding the number of people who got the vaccine and who also got infected with the virus as it gave me a better idea of what exactly the study is about. In addition, the fact that she had quote from the article gave the impression that she knew what she was talking about and it also gave me some additional information. Finally, Grace did a really good job on going even further into the topic and explaining what should be the next steps concerning this new finding.
ReplyDeleteAlthough this review was well written, one way it could have been made better is that Grace could have expanded the history of the outbreak as I was interested in learning more about it. So by adding a few sentences about this topic, she could have been even more thorough. Moreover, I would have added more information about the 2015 study so we could get more detail about this project.
Overall, this review was captivating and thorough. I had never heard about this new study on Ebola, so I was intrigued when I read Grace’s review. Thus, learning about this was very enlightening and taught me many new things. I read Grace Randall’s review of “Ebola Vaccine Proves Effective, Final Trial Results Shows” and thought that she did a very good job. I particularly liked her summary of the article and its main points. She kept her summary short and concise, which summaries are supposed to be, yet still included enough information for the reader to understand what happened in the article. In addition, I enjoyed her use of quotes in her review. She includes this quote when speaking about the recent triumph involving the Ebola vaccine“Of 5,837 people in Guinea who received a single shot of the vaccine, rVSV-ZEBOV, in the shoulder, none became infected with the virus 10 to 84 days after vaccination. ”I also liked how she gave details and specific percents, especially in the previous quote when she speaks about the specific number of people in Guinea who received the vaccine. These numbers helped provide the reader with more information on the vaccine’s experimentation.
Although Grace did a very good job in her review, she could use some improvement. For example, Grace could have spoken about the original outbreak and the history behind the disease. While of course I know about it, Grace must assume that she is speaking to an audience who knows nothing about the topic. Lastly, while Grace did speak about the ways in which the article was not perfectly written, she should have given specific examples of when the author does not go into enough detail. By giving us an example, we could have understood what she was criticizing a little bit better.
I thought that the review was written very well and Grace chose a great article to talk about. I think that the topic is very interesting and relevant and Grace has further educated me on the topic. I never knew about this topic before reading Grace’s review and now feel knowledgeable on this topic. Overall, I really enjoyed Grace’s review and learned a lot from it.
Grace did a great job with her review of the article "Ebola Vaccine Proves Effective, Final Trial Results Show." Her summary of the topic was thorough and gave the reader a strong understanding of the topic. Her use of quotes was insightful, and gave the reader a taste of what the article was like. Finally, Grace brought the review to a higher level with her discussion of accessibility to the vaccine.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Grace did a great job, there a a few things she could work on. There were a few minor grammar and spelling errors that took away from her review. I also wished she had further explained the idea of "ring vaccination," as it sounded very interesting.
Overall, Grace wrote a strong review on an important topic. I'm very glad to hear that researchers have found an effective vaccine, especially after the devastating epidemic a couple of years ago.

ReplyDeleteGrace, I read your review of "Ebola Vaccine Proves Effective, Final Trial Results Show" by Meghan Rosen and I thought that you did a good job. I thought that you did a nice job with your summary of the article. I was not confused about your topic. This is good for the readers since it creates a understanding of the subject matter for your review. Also, I like that your summary is brief. You are able to move to the main point of your review faster. Finally, I like that you include a direct quotation from the author of the article. It provides insight directly into the article.
Although your article was good, there are some things that you could improve on. First, I think you could add a direct quote from a scientist about how they think this discovery can make an impact. It would provide credibility to the article as well as different viewpoints and new knowledge. Also, I believe that you could improve some minor grammatical errors. This would stop the reader’s attention from being drawn away from the content of the review towards the grammar.
Overall, I enjoyed your review. I was not aware that a vaccine for Ebola was successful. I will be interested to see how well they are able to control Ebola in the future.
