Musa nanensis: New Species of Wild Banana Discovered in Thailand

The scientific name of the new species is Musa nanensis, which comes the Thai northern province of Nan, where the type specimens of this new species were found. Whereas the common name is the Kluai Si Nan which means banana pride of Nan, which is very fitting . The species is a perennial herb, or an herb that lives for more than two years,  measuring 4.9 to 9.8 feet (1.5 to 3 m) in height. In each bunch there are 3-10 hands and each hand contains 4-10 bananas, versus the typical banana that contains 10-20 bananas . The seeds were described as irregular, sharp  and angular, they measure 3-5 mm by 2-5 mm by 2-3 mm, so they are fairly small.
I chose this article because, I love bananas and I was curious to learn more.  After reading, I realized that this article was important because this species of banana is very rare, and could possibly be endangered, on the basis of IUCN, the plant should be listed as critically endangered and, therefore, considered to be in need of urgent conservation” (Sci-News 1)” Even though this is a new species it raises the topic of endangered species, and make people, or at least me, think of ways to preserve those species. Therefore, there is not much we, in Bronxville, can do about this new banana but there definitely other ways people can help.
After, reading this article I was a little disappointed because, I was really interested in learning about the new species of banana but the article was not well-written. Specifically I was left wondering nutritional facts about the banana, like if it is good for you.  Another  weakness of the article was, the words that were used without definition. For example, “In addition, Musa nanensis has various epidermal cell shapes with relatively longer hypodermal cells on its adaxial side as compared to corresponding epidermal cells” (Sci-News 1).  Although the description was informative, the terminology used gets confusing. Also, the paragraphs and sentences very choppy, which made fully understanding the article more challenging. On the other hand a strength of the article was that it did a good job describing the banana physically, as well as including picture.

  1. I read Rachel's review on, "Musa Nanensis: New Species of Wild Banana Discovered in Thailand". I thought she did a good job of giving the basic outline of what the article was about and the differences between the new banana and a regular species of banana. I also think she did a good job of using a quote and including a picture of the new type of banana. Lastly, I think she did a good job of explaining why the article didn't include details and what was wrong with the way the article was written. For example, the author used big, scientific words, but did not explain what they meant.
Although Rachel did a good job of reviewing the article, there were a few things she could have improved on. First, the summary of the article she read was not detailed at all and could have included a few more key points on why scientists think the new species of banana came to inhabit that part of the earth. Lastly, some of her sentences were hard to comprehend. Overall, though, she did a good job of reviewing the article.
From this review, I learned that there are many different types of species, even ones that we don't think of, like bananas. This could really change the world's perspective on how they look at evolution and natural selection. Society can also be aware that even fruits and vegetables can be endangered and rare, not only animals.
