Freezing Out the Bigger Picture

I read the article, “Freezing Out the Bigger Picture”, from the New York Times. This article essentially discussed the difference between weather and climate. This article aims to answer the question, “If the world is really warming up, how come it is so darned cold?” Last month when President Obama was declaring that global warming was a fact, it was hard for many Americans to believe this due to the many record low temperatures all around the country. For example, “The temperature would bottom out later that night at 13 degrees in Washington, 14 in New York, 1 in Chicago, minus 6 in Minneapolis — and those readings were toasty compared to some of the lows earlier in January.” Most people think that whatever sort of temperature and weather is happening around them is actually happening everywhere. However, these people do not understand the difference between weather and climate. Scientists refer to global warming as “global” because they look at trends all around the globe. It is about what is happening in the long run and not about the weather fluctuations day to day. With the USA only covering about 2% of the world, this severe weather only happening in certain places in the USA, really has no effect on the rest of the world. “The Arctic blasts were caused by big dips in the jet stream that allowed frigid air to descend from the polar regions into the central and eastern United States. But toward the west, those dips have been counterbalanced by unusual northward swings of the jet stream that sent temperatures soaring.” So where there are record low temperatures in some places around the world, there are also record highs in others, and they balance each other out. For example, California has been in a drought with high temperatures for 3 years. Scientists contend the massive decline of sea ice in the Arctic has destabilized a weather pattern that normally keeps frigid air bottled up near the pole. “That pattern is known as the polar vortex and its boundary is a fast-moving river of air called the jet stream. When the vortex weakens, the jet stream can develop big kinks, creating zones of extreme heat and cold.” Therefore, although many people perceive that the world is cooling due to these low temperatures, globally this decrease in temperature is not the case, and the world is actually warming up.
This article is very relevant to everyone in the world. We all have some impact on making the world warm up and it is our job to stop it before it becomes a much bigger issue than is already is. These record high and low temperatures also affect us day to day. We have been hit by these extremely cold temperatures and snow storms, which are things we aren’t always used to. If we want to preserve our globe, it is important that we look past what is just going on around us, and we take into account the entire globe because we all must work together to help the earth.
I thought this article was very interesting. It gave a very different take on global warming that I hadn’t heard of before. I think it is important that everyone understands that weather and climate are very different, and just because the weather is one way around them, it does not mean the weather is like that everywhere. I liked how this article emphasized how important it is for everyone to take into account the climate globally and to not get stuck on the weather around them.

  1. Caroline Cory’s review of the article, “Freezing Out the Bigger Picture” had many strengths and fewer weaknesses. One thing I think she presented very well is the argument that persists with people who fail to differentiate between climate and weather. I think that was one of the bigger pieces of the article and she tackled that very well. Another thing I think she did well is incorporating various pieces of the original article into her review. By using quotes from the article, she built credibility and a stronger review of the topic. A final thing I think she did particularly well is connecting the article to the whole world today. Climate change is a huge issue that affects everyone of us living on the earth and if we don’t take dramatic steps to alleviate this, much bigger problems will arise.
One thing I think Caroline could have improved upon is limiting the amount of information she gave us on why the US feels so cold opposed to what the increasing temperatures of the entire world could bring. I was still curious to learn about what global warming can bring. Another thing I think she could have improved upon is maybe adding things people could do to help fight global warming. Being that this article was all about global warming she could have finished with certain things people could help out with.
All in all, this entire article was very well written; as was Caroline’s review. I learned many different things about global warming and the freezing weather we have been experiencing this winter season. It is true that we get so caught up in these cold temperatures around us that we fail to recognize that our world is really heating up. This is something everyone needs to be made aware about.

  2. I read Caroline's review of "freezing out the big picture". I thought this article review was very well written and spoke in clear and easily understood language. A factor I liked about this article was Caroline's description of the differation between climate and temperature. she make it easy for the reader to learn about this topic and follow along. another strong point in her article is the several quotes she uses to support her facts. in every major bullet point caroline includes a powerful quote to prove her idea and keep the reader captivated. another part I was impressed with, was the article's explanation of how it was relevant to everybody's life and how we all should try to fix global warming.
a couple areas I would improve are the broad spectrum of detail on certain topics. Caroline spent too much time analyzing the article and not enough time depicting how this would effect the people of earth. I would discuss the attitude of the public while hearing this news from Obama and analyze the reaction in closer detail. another thing I would improve for this article is give an opposite view point on this topic. contrast the two sides to show the superior validity of your argument.
this article was very interesting and captivating one aspect that I found interesting was the facts that caroline included in her article review,"the jet stream can develop big kinks, creating zones of extreme heat and cold.” overall I really enjoyed this article and I thought it had a strong argument that was presented well in this review.

  3. Caroline did a great job summarizing the article, “Freezing Out the Bigger Picture.” She mentioned that the article said that people need to recognize that climate and weather have different meanings. Global warming focuses on the long-run, not the day-to-day changes in weather. Also, she wrote that global warming concentrates on the worldwide climate. Therefore, while New Yorkers have been experiencing very cold weather, Californians have been experiencing a severe drought, bringing record high temperatures. Second, Caroline relates the article well to humanity by saying that, “We all have some impact on making the world warm up and it is our job to stop it before it becomes a much bigger issue than is already is. These record high and low temperatures also affect us day to day. We have been hit by these extremely cold temperatures and snow storms, which are things we aren’t always used to.” In other words, she recognizes that we have witnessed global warming by these recent odd weather patterns, which is something humans have caused but need to stop. Lastly, Caroline incorporated a few quotes to make her review stronger and more connected to the original article.
Although Caroline wrote a great review, she could have made her review less detailed and briefer by taking out some unnecessary information. Second, Caroline should have posted the original article’s citation, and she should have used parenthetical citations for each of the quotes to give credit to the original article’s author.
Although I did know and understand the meaning of global warming prior to reading this article, I learned that California is experiencing a severe drought, bringing record high temperatures. This shocked me because although I knew about the whole idea of global warming, I was unaware of the current severe weather the western half of America has been experiencing recently.
