“Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies”

As the title implies, this article pertains to the increasingly relevant issue of climate change, and it’s effect on the planet’s food supply. The article acknowledges that while the rising temperatures may increase crop production in some places, the global result will be a dramatic reduction in production. Overall reducing production, “as much as 2 percent each decade for the rest of the century, compared with what it would be without climate change.” Adding to the issue, our rapidly increasing population means that demand for these crops is expected to rise, “as much as 14 percent each decade.” The article informs the reader that there are previous assumptions that are no longer accepted, such as the belief that food production could dramatically increase in coming decades due to higher carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. In addition to climate change’s impact on crops, the article touches on its impact on animals, noting that plants and animals will colonize new areas to escape rising temperatures, and that many could become extinct. The article explains unfortunate cycle- that global food demand might have to be met by putting new land into production. This could mean, “chopping down large areas of forest, an action that would only accelerate climate change by sending substantial amounts of carbon dioxide into the air from the destruction of trees.” While reviewing the dangers of climate change, the article also manages to offer some hope. It reveals that hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent every year to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, even though these efforts are so far said to be, “inadequate to head off drastic climatic changes later in the century.” President Obama also signed an executive order on Friday to step up these efforts in the US. Still, the article makes the point that more intensive and expensive plans will have to be put in place.
The information provided in the article profoundly affects humanity for obvious reasons. If we personally don’t experience this expected food shortage in the next few decades, we can be sure our children and grandchildren will. If not yet leaving us hungry, the issue will affect humanity because, any shortfall in food supply, “would lead to rising food prices that would hit the world’s poor hardest, as has already occurred from price increases of recent years.” The affect on humanity also depends on where one is living. For example, the article says that the agricultural risks are greatest for tropical countries due to their higher poverty rates and “projected impacts that exceed adaptive capacity.”
Overall, I found this to be a very informative article. It seems reliable as it cited its sources of information, it is clear and it is concise. It outlined the major issues of the effect of climate change on food production, and ended with some optimism about the future. The article could have been thorough in some respects. For instance it could have been more specific about procedures taken to limit carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, though, the article did not strike me as lacking and was a very interesting read.

  1. In Jackie’s review of the article, “Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies,” she did a great job of summarizing and explaining the risks that global warming could cause on our world’s food supply. I think that Jackie’s ability to stress the urgency of the problem was a strong point of her critique. Her article was so recent that all of the issues discussed clearly have or will have a prominent impact on all audiences, and her discussion of the article spoke to the heart of that issue. As she later explained and analyzed, even “If we personally don’t experience this expected food shortage in the next few decades, we can be sure our children and grandchildren will.” That she was able to see the more distance future of this problem was great and it really added to her argument. As a whole, Jackie did a great job of incorporating quotes. The ones that she used enhanced her response, especially the part where she talked about the effect of a food shortage in paragraph two, because the line was seamlessly weaved into her own writing so her voice was not lost. Overall, Jackie did a really good job of discussing this pressing issue to our world.
Although she did such an amazing job, her review could have been brought to the next level if she would have researched the pieces that she thought the article was missing. For example, she could have found out what the process was for limiting carbon dioxide emissions. Jackie could have also given some of the background on the topic that was presented in the beginning of the original article, and that could have boosted her argument even more. Even without these minor changes, Jackie’s review of the article was still well written and presented.
I found the topic of Jackie’s article to be very interesting and relevant, which made the article and her review all the more intriguing to read. Although I have heard much about global warming, I had never known what the effects of it would be on the world’s food supply, and to be presented that information so simply and interestingly was great.

  2. Jackie did a very good job summarizing “Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies”. As she went into detail about crop production I thought she did a great job incorporating quotes. I thought it was beneficial for her to use quotes to ensure correct facts while still having a good sense of her voice. They way she balanced the details she summarized was well presented too. The part that stuck out the most to me was when she spoke about the negatives of the “unfortunate cycle” and she followed it up with how the article provides some hope too, that a lot of work is going leading to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Jackie also explained how the article affects humanity well. She got right to the point and said, “If we personally don’t experience this expected food shortage in the next few decades, we can be sure our children and grandchildren will”. That quote stuck out to me the most because it highlights how this will greatly impact us in some way or another and it needs to be dealt with now.
Although I really enjoyed this article, I thought two things could be improved. It was great how Jackie brought a lot of the ideas discussed in the article into her summary but when she included all of them I thought some of it was a little jumpy, and the ideas didn’t flow together. But I thought that was only for two or three pieces of evidence, the majority worked for me. The only other thing I thought that could’ve made the article better was just adding a sentence at the end of the second paragraph. Personally teachers have drilled into my brain never to end a paragraph on a quote, so naturally I look for a small explanation afterwards, which was not included in this article. Overall though, I thought this was very good.
From reading Jackie’s summary and the original article I found it very interesting that the climate change is expected to increase our demands for these crops “as much as 14 percent each decade”. Before reading this article I never knew how much impact the climate change had on the world’s food intake.

  3. I read the review by my classmate Jackie Saralegui on the article, “Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies.” This article talks about the increasingly relevant issue of climate change, and its effect on the planet’s food supply. The article acknowledges that while the rising temperatures may increase crop production in some places, the global result will be a dramatic reduction in production. Jackie did a great job writing this article review. One thing Jackie did really well was the way she set up the format of her review. She started off getting straight to the details of the information and incorporated all the facts. Then she summarized how this effects the environment and proceeded to go on with effects on humanity. Jackie also did a really good job incorporating quotes into her review. Like the one stating that the increase of demand for crops goes up 14% each decade. Lastly, Jackie shed some light on the readers by saying that the article provides some type of hope. For instance, that a lot of work is being done to decrease CO2 emissions. Although I really enjoyed Jackie’s review she could have done a couple things to enhance her writing. Jackie could have went into deeper detail in discussing the work done to decrease the changes in climate. Also, Jackie could have done more research on the people who are trying to stop these climate changes. I found the topic of Jackie’s article to be very interesting. One interesting facts is that plants and animals tend to colonize in new areas due to escaping the rising temperatures.

  4. I thought that Jackie did a great job summarizing “Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies”. She made the article very clear and easy to understand for the reader. The article was all about how climate change will affect crop production and crop prices around the world. While global warming may increase crop production in some areas of the world, it mainly serves to decrease the supply of crops, which will have a major impact on the world. Not only is there less food to eat, but as a result the prices for these foods will continue to rise, making it extremely difficult for those in poverty to afford anything to eat. I loved how Jackie used so many quotes. These direct references to the text helped tie her summary and the actual article together very nicely. In one instance she quoted a line that said that climate change will decrease crop production “as much as 2 percent each decade for the rest of the century, compared with what it would be without climate change.” It gets even scarier when you consider the next quote that the demand for crops is expected to rise “as much as 14 percent each decade.” Jackie was able to clarify just how big of a problem this is to the world, and how the effects are imminent. Two things that Jackie could have improved on in her summary would have been tying the piece together better and providing more background information. I thought that her summary went from idea to idea with a lack of transitions. I also thought that she could have better described the current climate situation by giving some background or history on the problem. Both of these points are very minor though, and overall Jackie did a really great job. I was amazed when reading this article just how imminent of a threat climate change really is. I always sort of imagined it as some far off problem, but it seems as though it could have a major impact in my lifetime. I had never understood the severity of the problem before, but thanks to Jackie’s summary, I now have a better grasp of the seriousness of climate change.

  5. In Jackie’s review of the article “Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies”, she provided an extensive summary supported by evidence from the article as well as her own personal opinion on the matter at hand. One part of her review that I though was presented well was the way she added direct quotes from the article into her review. By doing this, it made sure the facts were correct and the meaning was not lost in a rewording of the information. In some summaries, we see a student losing sight of important facts or not understanding the given information, resulting in a misinterpretation in their review. With the addition of strong direct quotes, the important details were not lost. Secondly, after reading the article myself, I realized Jackie had to analyze from the given information how this can affect us in the future. Though this point is sometimes obvious to us, I thought that she analyzed the effects of climate change on the human race very well since this was not directly given. Lastly, I found it important that she incorporated some flaws that she found in the article, such as not enough information given. This allows the reader of the article to see that not everything is being told to them and can push them towards researching the topic on their own. Although the review was written very well, there were a few things she could have improved on. There were a few grammar errors, only around one or two, that can easily be corrected through thorough editing and revising of the review. Secondly, since the article didn’t present itself with all of the information needed to understand what event was occurring, possible outside research could have been done to help the reader of the review understand what was going on. Overall, I was very surprised on how climate change can have a positive effect on humanity, such as a possible increase in crop production. When thinking of climate change, I only used to think of the negatives, now I know the positive effects.

  6. Overall, I think Jackie did a great job reviewing this article. One thing she did particularly well was her inclusion of the causes and effects of the issue that the article talks about. This made it easy to understand why this issue was happening, how it can affect us, and how we can respond to these effects. Jackie also did a great job organizing her review. She used clear, concise language that allowed her review to flow and for her message to effectively reach the audience. A third thing Jackie did very well was giving validity to her review. Her inclusion of direct quotes from the article gave her review validity and greatly supported her message.
Although Jackie did a great job, there are some things she could have done to make her review better. I think it would have been more effective if she elaborated on how the issue relates directly to us. She talks more about how it will affect the world’s poor, and people in the tropics but not so much about how it will affect us. If she connected it more to us directly I think the issue would seem more pressing. Also, I think she could have done a better job giving background information. She does include some information, but it would be helpful if she included information on how this issue started.
Overall, I found Jackie’s article to be very interesting. One aspect I found to be very interesting is the talk about the impact this issue will have on animals. I never thought about how animals would have to migrate because of it and become extinct.
