A recent study conducted by human physiology researchers at the University of Oregon has shown the influence that becoming accustomed to heat has on athletic performance in both hot and cold atmospheres. Using the results from experiments on highly trained cyclists of both genders, scientists came to the conclusion that “heat acclimation exposure provided considerable ergogenic benefits in cool conditions, in addition to the expected performance benefits in the hot environment.” This study differed from previous ones in that it assessed the effect of high temperatures on aerobic performance in cool weather. These findings are actually very relevant to today’s competitive sports world, as athletes can possibly use the method of heat exposure to increase the quality of how they perform in cool conditions. This approach works because, when the body is accustomed to high temperatures, the body can better control its temperature, improving sweating and increasing blood flow. It also heightens blood volume so the heart can distribute more blood to organs, muscles, and skin. According to Santiago Lorenzo, a researcher who studied at the University of Oregon and now trains at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, heat acclimation makes more sense than the widely-used strategy of living at a high altitude and training at a low altitude, being “easier to apply” and leading to “more robust physiological adaptations.” Researchers also discovered that heat may cause enzymatic alteration which could improve the work done by the muscle during exercise.
I thoroughly enjoyed this article, as I found the topic very interesting. However, I would have liked to learn more about the actual explanation of why heat acclimation improves athletic performance in cool conditions. There was only about one paragraph on this, and I thought it should have made up a much larger portion of the article. The majority of the article was spent sighting specific researchers and specific tests that were conducted; a more general discussion of the conclusions that were drawn and the reasons behind those conclusions, I felt, would have better served the reader. In addition, the article could have been improved by going deeper into how the findings impact today’s sports and the training techniques of today’s athletes.

I think this review was very well written. I liked the way that the information was presented in a simple and straightforward way. Sometimes reviews contain complex scientific topics that are difficult to follow. However, Lizzie’s review was very clear and concise. I also like the way that the review shows that this article is in fact very relevant to its readers. Many times, articles about planets and animals are hard to relate to, but this article affects many of its readers because sports are much more present in our lives. Lizzie does a good job of presenting this connection between the subject matter and the reader. Lastly, she develops the review in a very organized manner. The use of quotes and names of research institutions keeps the article interesting. She makes sure to use a good balance of direct information from the article and her own analysis.
ReplyDeleteThe review was in general very informative and well written, but if I had to add anything to it, I would suggest adding an explanation of how the process of this phenomenon works. It would be interesting to learn how the enzymatic alterations work and how the body actually becomes accustomed to the heat. Also, I would perhaps include specific statistics and numbers to help elaborate on the actual experiments that took place. The addition of such figures would help prove the widespread effect of this new discovery.
This article was impressive because it helps prove how important science is to all life activities. Many people think of obscure chemical experiments and extinct species when it comes to scientific experiments. However, this article shows that even sports, which are so important to people of all ages and nationalities, depend on science. This discovery may lead to a whole new era of improved athletics.
I think Liz wrote a good review of her article. I found it helpful that she gave a brief description of her article in the beginning and then gave the details. The topic is intriguing and they way she presented it was well thought out. For example, by presenting a quote she was able to back up a point. She also incorporated the quote in a coherent manner, the information flows nicely. Finally Liz gave a very good example of how hot environments improve the performance of athletes in cooler environments.
ReplyDeleteI wish Liz gave more background on her topic, maybe how it originated. I know little about this and would have liked to have more background. Also, she could have included more about tests and how its affects sports.
Overall Liz wrote a nice review. I really enjoyed reading about this topic. I also think it was a good idea to give her own opinion on the article.
Lizzie had a well-written, informative summary of the article. Her synopsis was not very long, but it told her reader everything they needed to know from the article. She was able to break down the article in an efficient amount of space. Additionally, her suggestions for the article were good pointers. When I read the article myself, I wished the author would have talked more about the results of the experiment, rather than just talk about how they performed it in length. Moreover, I was interested in how this study pertained to other sports, besides cycling, which was not mentioned in the article. Finally, I enjoyed the topic of her article. Being an athlete, it was actually somewhat intriguing to read this study and see how it may apply to my own sports. The article itself was not very long, and it was pretty easy to follow along.
ReplyDeleteThough her arguments and summary are great, there are a few suggestions I could add to make them even better. A large part of the article itself consists of scientists carrying out the studies and their results, including percentages and conclusions. It would have been nice for her to include some of that data in her review. Additionally, it would have been nice for her to maybe research other studies like this one and link them to strengthen the argument in this article.
From this article, I learned that training in hotter conditions has the power to improve your breathing and endurance in all climates. Its pretty cool how training in a warm environment can improve your performance in colder climates as well.
Elizabeth did a great job at summarizing the article. She stated it clearly and simply, and as a result, I completely understood what the article was about. She also made her review as concise as possible without neglecting important information which made me want to read more, and maybe even read more about this study. She even managed to incorporate all aspects of the article in her summary—how the study was conducted, how this can impact our society today, what researchers are saying, and how training in heat improves performance in the cold. I also liked that she used direct quotes from the article, because it really tied her summary together and gave it a stronger link to the article.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Elizabeth Detwiler wrote an effective summary, there is always room for improvement. I think she should have included a little bit about where this study is going and whom it could help the most, because it does mention that at the end of the article. She could also define terms like ergogenic for those who might not know what it means.
I learned a lot from both Elizabeth D’s review and the article about how training in heat and getting accustomed to it can improve athletes’ performance in the cold and would love to learn more about it.
Lizzie's review immediately grabbed my attention and I remained interested throughout the duration of her review. She did a great job of making the article interesting for people and relating it to their personal lives. The manner in which she presented the information was also impressive as it continued with her "personal level" review. It was clear and very to the point which made it an enjoyable read. The article itself was clustered at times with facts but Lizzie's review perfectly incorporated information directly from the article itself and then also her own thoughts and opinions on what the author was saying.
ReplyDeleteOverall, Lizzie did a great job on her current event review, however if I had to make two suggestions, I would include more scientific information on the discoveries which would add to the personal impact that the readers felt sense hard scientific information often times makes an argument more convincing. Secondly, it would have been nice if she had included some specific examples people, athletes etc, have or will be impacted.
In conclusion, I enjoyed Lizzie's review and definitely learned a lot about how to improve my performance as an athlete. In my case specifically, it was really important for me to realize that all the running and training that I do for soccer in the summer heat does have a positive impact on the way I play in my ice hockey games, despite the fact that the sports and training themselves are quite different.

Throughout the review, readers we immediately drawn to the fascinating study of the influence heat has on our bodies and what it can prevent or expose us to do. In the beginning of the review, the author begins drawing us to the attention of where her evidence is coming from. She did a good job addressing her first piece of evidence right after a brief summary of the results from the experiments. She states, “Using the results from experiments on highly cyclists of both genders, scientists came to the conclusion that heat acclimation exposure provided considerable ergogenic benefits…” This helps readers get an understanding of how temperature has an affect on our bodies. In addition, towards the middle of the first paragraph, the writer goes into depth about talking about multiple approaches to this argument. She writes, “This approach works because, when the body is accustomed to high temperatures, the body can better control its temperature, improving sweating and increasing blood flow.” This leaders readers to think about this decisive question on their own, comparing it to her previous statement in the beginning of the paragraph. Lastly, she constantly states that new discoveries that researchers have made and what the cause and affect is to that reasoning. For example, “According to Santiago Lorenzo, a researcher who studied at the University of Oregon and now trains at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, heat acclimation makes more sense than the widely-used strategy of living at a high altitude and training at a low altitude…” It is important for readers to be provided with that information so they can better understand the topic of study.
Some areas of improvement across the article include the structure and format of her writing. In the second paragraph, I believe the writer could have elaborated more on why she enjoyed this article rather than saying, “I found the topic very interesting” which is very bland. Instead, you can improve by implementing more exciting adjectives or verbs into the sentence. Lastly, although she included great supporting evidence to the study, this review is overwhelmed by quotes and evidence cited from the article. For example, “According to Santiago Lorenzo...” or “researchers at…”I would’ve liked to of read a clear argument and have it supported by a few pieces of evidence in chronological order. You can improve upon this by grabbing the most reliable source and implementing it after a strong, cohesive argument you will make.
Overall, I learned a great deal about the effect of temperature on our bodies. I never knew that heat could lead to side effects along with the cold weather. The main reason I chose this review to critic on was because I’m always fascinated with the human body and how it responds to anything in the world, specifically things that we cannot control, such as temperature or the weather. This review has changed my perspective on the way I exercise and I will be mindful on how I’m feeling at the moment and what my body can do to overcome this feeling.
